Solid Waste

Since the inception of the volume priced garbage collection, the load being hauled to the Grand Forks landfill has decreased by one-third. The City now hauls approximately 600 tons to the landfill each year.

Household garbage must be in garbage bags and secured with an official City of Northwood garbage tag. The tags are one dollar each and can be purchased at City Hall, Guenthners  Super Valu or Northwood Co Op Oil. Each bag must be no larger than 50 gallons and no heavier than 70 pounds. No household garbage will be picked up unless secured by an official tag. The tag system is to encourage recycling. Collection day is Thursday for all residents. Commercial garbage is collected Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Garbage Rates

Residential $ 8.70/Month + $1 per Tag

Commercial $ 4.62 per cubic yd (Minimum $20.00/month)

Due to the small participation in curb-side recycling, the city no longer offers curb-side service. The drop off site for recycling is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at the west shop. If you are physically unable and you need assistance with your recycling, please contact Jerry Hanson at 587-6291 ext 13 to make other arrangements with the public works department.

Subject to weather permitting, and in the absence of holiday conflicts, the City will pick up yard and garden waste from all official City yard waste containers every Thursday from May through October. Branches can be placed out at your normal garbage location. These containers can be purchased at City Hall for ten dollars each. Leaves and grass cannot be accepted in plastic bags. There is a designated site on the west side of the City Shop located west of town passed the cemetery. You can take yard waste to the designated area at your convenience. No plastic bags can be left at the site.

An annual citywide clean-up day for inert waste items for residential areas are scheduled each year in the spring. Items can be taken to the inert landfill in the schedule below.
