Standby Generator Hookup
The City of Northwood requires that only a qualified licensed electrician
should connect a standby generator to your main power system. There should be a
double-throw switch or generator panel with mechanical interlock and a visible
open between the service lines and the generator. Please follow these generator
safety tips.
Home Generator Safety Tips
- Do not exceed the rating capacity on the generator's nameplate.
Overloading can cause serious damage to the generator and to your
appliances.
- Run generator outside, downwind of structures. Be sure there is adequate
ventilation in the area. Exhaust fumes can be DEADLY, so run your generator
outside only. Be sure to install a carbon monoxide detector. Running an
electric generator inside of a building attached to a dwelling is against
all fire and safety codes.
- Fuel spilled on a hot generator can cause an explosion. Temporarily shut
off the generator and let it cool before re-filling.
- The amount of fuel you may store or the storage location is restricted.
The Uniform Fire Code section 7902.5.8 states "quantities of flammable
and combustible liquids in excess of 10 gallons used for maintenance
purposes and the operation of equipment shall be store in liquid storage
cabinets" and "quantities not exceeding 10 gallons are allowed to
be stored outside of a cabinet when in approved containers located in
private garages or other approved locations."
- Be sure to keep children and pets away from your generator. Make sure the
cord is covered and protected from foot traffic.
- Only a qualified licensed electrician should attempt to connect a standby
generator to your main power system. There should be a double-throw switch
with mechanical interlock and a visible open between the service lines and
the generator.
- When using an extension cord, be sure it is of adequate size and has a
three-prong, grounded plug.
- Keep a fully charged; approved Fire Extinguisher located near the
generator.
- Always properly disconnect from the City Utility System before starting
your backup generator.
- Never fuel an electric generator when the generator is running.
